Hoke County Symphonic Band Honored at Commissioners Meeting

The Hoke County High School Symphonic Band attended the Hoke County Commissioner's meeting on May 1, 2017. The Commissioners honored the group with a Resolution for performing at Carnegie Hall in New York City. 

The Hoke High School Symphonic Band is under the direction of Mr. DeVon Pickett, a graduate of Fayetteville State University who also directs the Mighty Marching Bucks, Hoke County High School’s Marching Band.

The Marching Band was invited to march in the 2016 Veteran’s Day Parade in Washington, D.C. After performing in front of the Lincoln Memorial, Mr. Pickett was approached by a parade organizer who inquired as to whether Hoke County High School had a symphonic band. After learning that there was a symphonic band at Hoke County High School, the parade organizer encouraged Mr. Pickett to apply for the band to perform at the National Band and Orchestra Festival at Carnegie Hall in New York City,

Carnegie Hall, located in Midtown Manhattan in New York City is one of the most prestigious music venues in the world and has hosted such diverse performers as Louis Armstrong, Bob Dylan and the Beatles. 

The Hoke County High School Symphonic Band consists of 55 students, primarily Juniors and Seniors. After receiving the invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall, the Hoke County High School Symphonic Band went through a rigorous application process that included writing essays and sending performance recordings to the program judges.

The Hoke County High School Symphonic Band was one of eight high school bands from across the United States and Canada chosen to perform at the National Band and Orchestra Festival. The Hoke County High School Symphonic Band conducted fundraisers and received support from the Hoke County School System and individual donors to raise over $100,000 to pay for the trip to New York City.

On April 15, 2017 the Hoke County High School Symphonic Band performed a 30-minute set for a panel of adjudicators made up of world-renowned composers and directors at Carnegie Hall. The selections performed were the “Karl King March”, “Landscapes”, “Along an English Countryside” and “Arabesque”.

The Hoke County High School Symphonic Band received a rating of Superior from the adjudicators at the National Band and Orchestra Festival,

The Hoke County Board of Commissioners recognizes the Hoke County High School Symphonic Band and their Director, Mr. DeVon Pickett, for their dedication, hard work and vision. The Hoke County High School Symphonic Band did an excellent job representing Hoke County. The Hoke County High School Symphonic Band brought to life Mr. Pickett’s words for them: “The impossible is possible”.
